Asphalt quantity is calculated by volume (cubic yards or tons). The key variable is density — hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot, or about 2 tons per cubic yard.
Formula
Tons = (Length × Width × Depth ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2000 × Waste Factor
Depth in inches ÷ 12 converts to feet. 145 lbs/ft³ is standard hot mix asphalt density. Divide by 2000 to convert lbs to tons.
