How to Calculate Boards for Any Project

The key to accurate board calculations is using actual dimensions, not nominal (named) dimensions. A "2x4" is actually 1.5" × 3.5". Always measure the real board width before calculating.

Area per board = (Length × Width) ÷ 144 (to convert sq inches to sq ft)
Boards needed = ⌈Total Sq Ft × (1 + Waste %) ÷ Area per Board⌉. For decking with gaps, add gap to board width in the denominator to get effective spacing.
