Sheets of Plywood Needed

How to Calculate Plywood Sheets

Calculating plywood is straightforward: measure your total area in square feet, divide by the square footage of your chosen sheet size, then add your waste factor and round up to whole sheets.

Sheets Needed = ⌈(Total Sq Ft × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ Sheet Sq Ft⌉
Always round UP to the nearest whole sheet. A standard 4×8 sheet = 32 sq ft. With 10% waste: 500 sq ft ÷ 32 × 1.10 = 17.2 → buy 18 sheets.

Plywood by Application

💡 Buying Tip: Always buy an extra sheet or two beyond your calculation for future repairs. Plywood prices and availability change, so lock in at the same time and same lot for consistent appearance and grading.

Plywood vs. OSB

OSB (oriented strand board) is usually 10–20% cheaper than plywood for sheathing applications and is structurally equivalent for most uses. Plywood is preferred for subflooring in wet areas due to better moisture resistance and edge performance. For cabinets and finished work, plywood is always preferred over OSB.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many sheets of plywood do I need? +
To calculate plywood sheets needed, divide the total square footage of the area by the square footage per sheet, then add 10–15% for waste. A standard 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet. For example, a 500 sq ft floor needs about 500/32 = 15.6 sheets, plus 10% waste = 17–18 sheets.
What size does plywood come in? +
The most common plywood size is 4 feet × 8 feet (32 sq ft per sheet). Other sizes include 4×9 and 4×10. Thickness ranges from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch or more, with 3/4 inch being standard for subfloors and 1/2 inch for walls and roofing sheathing.
How much waste factor should I add for plywood? +
Add 10% waste for simple rectangular areas with few cuts. For rooms with many angles, openings, or complex shapes, add 15–20%. Always round up to whole sheets since you cannot buy partial sheets.
What thickness plywood do I need for a subfloor? +
Subfloor plywood should be at least 3/4 inch (19mm) thick for joists spaced 16 inches on center. For joists at 24 inch spacing, use 7/8 or 1 inch plywood. Thinner plywood (1/2 inch) works for walls and 7/16 or 1/2 inch OSB or plywood for roof sheathing.
How much does a sheet of plywood cost? +
Plywood sheet prices vary by thickness, grade, and local market conditions. In 2024–2025, 3/4-inch 4×8 plywood sheets typically cost $40–$80 each, 1/2-inch sheets cost $30–$55, and 1/4-inch sheets cost $20–$40. Treated or specialty grades cost more.
