What 16:9 Actually Means — and What It Doesn't

The ratio 16:9 describes a shape, not a size. It means for every 16 units of width, there are 9 units of height. That unit can be pixels, centimetres, inches — it doesn't matter. A 160×90 pixel thumbnail and a 3840×2160 pixel 4K frame are both exactly 16:9, just at dramatically different sizes.

Most people confuse aspect ratio with resolution. Resolution is the actual pixel count. Aspect ratio is the shape. 1920×1080 and 1280×720 are both 16:9, but 1920×1080 has 2.25 times more pixels.
