Sources & Methodology

Height conversion uses the exact international inch definition (25.4 mm). Child height prediction uses the AAP mid-parental height formula. Average heights sourced from CDC and NCD-RisC global studies.

Height Conversion: 1 inch = 2.54 cm (exact, per international standard). Feet to cm: (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54. Cm to ft/in: cm ÷ 2.54 = total inches; floor(total inches ÷ 12) = feet; remainder = inches.

Child Height Prediction (AAP Mid-Parental Method): Boy predicted height = (Dad inches + Mom inches + 5) ÷ 2. Girl predicted height = (Dad inches + Mom inches − 5) ÷ 2. Range: ±4 inches (10 cm) covers ~95% of outcomes.

Height Conversion & Child Height Prediction Guide

Height is measured in different units depending on where you live — feet and inches are used in the United States, while most of the world uses centimeters and meters. Converting accurately requires the exact conversion factor: 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters exactly, defined by international agreement in 1959. Knowing how to convert between systems is essential for medical forms, sports, travel, and understanding clothing sizes internationally.

Complete Height Conversion Reference

Feet & Inches to cm: total_inches = (feet × 12) + inches    cm = total_inches × 2.54
cm to Feet & Inches: total_inches = cm ÷ 2.54    feet = floor(total_inches ÷ 12)    inches = total_inches mod 12
Meters to Feet: meters × 3.28084    Feet to Meters: feet ÷ 3.28084
Example: Convert 5'10" to cm: (5×12)+10 = 70 inches. 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm
Example: Convert 180 cm to feet: 180÷2.54 = 70.87 in = 5 feet 10.87 inches ≈ 5'11"

Child Height Prediction — Mid-Parental Method

The mid-parental height (MPH) formula, recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, estimates a child's adult height based on the average of their parents' heights with a gender correction. It predicts height to within ±4 inches (10 cm) about 95% of the time. The formula accounts for the fact that sons are typically taller than daughters by about 5 inches (12.5 cm).

Factors That Affect Height

About 60–80% of height is determined by genetics (the mid-parental formula captures this). The remaining 20–40% is influenced by environment:

💡 Measuring Tip: Height varies by up to 1 cm throughout the day due to spinal disc compression. You are tallest in the morning after sleep. For the most consistent measurements, always measure at the same time of day, barefoot on a hard flat floor, standing straight against a wall with eyes and ears level (Frankfort plane).
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply total inches by 2.54. First convert feet to inches (multiply by 12) and add remaining inches. Example: 5 feet 9 inches = 69 total inches. 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm. The exact conversion is 1 inch = 2.54 cm, defined by international agreement in 1959.
Divide centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches. Then divide by 12 to get feet (round down), with the remainder as inches. Example: 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.9 inches. 68.9 ÷ 12 = 5 feet remainder 8.9 inches, so 175 cm = approximately 5'9".
Use the AAP mid-parental height formula. For boys: (dad's height in inches + mom's height in inches + 5) ÷ 2. For girls: (dad's height + mom's height − 5) ÷ 2. The result is the predicted height with a ±4 inch range covering 95% of outcomes. Use the Child Height Predictor tab above for instant results.
The average height for adult men in the US is approximately 5'9" (175.3 cm) according to CDC data. Globally, male heights range from about 5'4" in some Southeast Asian countries to nearly 6'0" in the Netherlands, which has the tallest average male population in the world at around 182.5 cm.
The average height for adult women in the US is approximately 5'4" (161.3 cm) according to CDC data. Globally, female average heights range from about 4'11" (150 cm) to 5'7" (170 cm). Latvia and the Netherlands rank among the countries with the tallest average women.
6 feet equals exactly 182.88 centimeters. The calculation: 6 feet × 12 = 72 inches. 72 × 2.54 = 182.88 cm. Rounded to the nearest whole number, 6 feet is 183 cm. Use the Height Converter tab above to convert any height instantly.
5 feet equals exactly 60 inches (5 × 12 = 60). In centimeters, 5 feet = 60 × 2.54 = 152.4 cm. In meters, 5 feet = 1.524 m. Common related conversions: 5'1" = 61 in = 154.9 cm, 5'6" = 66 in = 167.6 cm.
The mid-parental height formula predicts adult height within ±4 inches (10 cm) about 95% of the time. It captures the genetic component of height (about 60–80% of total height variation). Actual height can differ due to nutrition, sleep quality, health, and other environmental factors during childhood and adolescence.
In the United States, men above 6'0" (183 cm) are above the 75th percentile and considered tall. Men above 6'3" (190 cm) are in the top 5%. In the Netherlands where average male height is ~6'0", a man needs to be about 6'3" to be considered notably tall. The perception of "tall" varies significantly by country.
Stand barefoot on a hard flat floor against a wall. Keep feet together, look straight ahead (eyes and ears level). Place a flat rigid object (book or ruler) on top of your head, level against the wall. Mark the wall and measure from floor to mark. Measure in the morning — spinal discs expand overnight making you about 1 cm taller in the morning than at night.
