Calculating the number of deck boards you need is one of the most common construction questions homeowners face when planning a deck project. Get it wrong and you either run out of material mid-project or waste money on excess boards. This guide covers deck board quantity, deck flooring area, deck stain gallons, and full material cost estimation.
The fundamental deck board calculation converts your total deck area into the number of individual boards needed, accounting for the gap between each board. Since boards don't provide coverage equal to their full width (the gap between them reduces effective coverage), you divide your area by the net coverage per board.
Net board coverage (ft) = (Board width inches - Gap inches) / 12
Linear feet needed = Deck area (sq ft) / Net coverage (ft)
Board count = ceil(Linear feet / Board length) x Waste factor
Example: 16x12 ft deck (192 sq ft), 5.5" boards, 0.25" gap, 12 ft boards:
Net = (5.5 - 0.25) / 12 = 0.4375 ft | LF = 192 / 0.4375 = 439 LF

The most common deck board is 5/4x6 — the nominal 5/4x6 lumber has an actual dimension of approximately 1 inch thick by 5.5 inches wide. The standard gap between deck boards is 1/4 inch for kiln-dried lumber and composite decking. Use 1/8 inch for wet or green pressure-treated lumber, which will shrink as it dries and open up to approximately 1/4 inch naturally. Never install deck boards with zero gap — boards expand when wet and will buckle or cup without space.
Deck stain coverage varies significantly based on wood type, condition, and the product formulation. Semi-transparent stains penetrate the wood grain and cover 250 to 300 square feet per gallon on new smooth wood. Solid stains and deck paints cover 150 to 200 sq ft per gallon but obscure the wood grain. Weathered, rough-sawn, or heavily porous wood absorbs 30 to 50% more product.

For decks with multiple sections (L-shaped, wrap-around, or multi-level), calculate each rectangular section independently and add the totals. Subtract any built-in planters, seating areas, or hot tub pads that will not be decked. For decks with cutouts for trees or posts, subtract those circular or square areas from the total. Always measure the actual deck surface you are covering, not just the plan dimensions.

All decks attached to the house or elevated more than 30 inches above grade require a building permit in most jurisdictions. Key code requirements: ledger boards must be bolted (not nailed) to the house rim joist with approved connectors per IRC R507.9. Guardrails are required when the deck is more than 30 inches above grade; minimum height is 36 inches for residential decks under 30 ft, 42 inches for commercial. Joists for a 12 ft span require 2x10 at 16 inches OC or 2x12 at 24 inches OC using standard SPF lumber.
Measure the actual deck surface, not the overall structure footprint. For a rectangular deck, measure length and width in feet and multiply. For L-shaped decks, split into two rectangles. Include the area under built-in benches if those boards will be installed. Do not include railing posts or the area of a hot tub if the deck boards stop at the unit.
